Minister of State for External Affairs M J Akbar resigned from his post this afternoon.
In a brief statement, Akbar said he had decided to seek justice in a court of law in his personal capacity, against a spate of allegations of inappropriate behaviour against him, relating to his days as a News Print editor.
He said that he deemed it appropriate to step down from office and challenge the false accusations levied against him.
He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj for giving him the opportunity to serve the country.
Over the last fortnight, about 20 women have come forward to narrate experiences of alleged sexual harassment at the hands of Akbar. \
He has filed a defamation case against one, which will be heard on Thursday.
