Jammu, Oct 26: The markets of this winter capital of the state witnessed heavy rush and buzz on the eve of ‘Karwachauth’ festival being celebrated in Northern parts of the country by the women folk for longevity of their husbands.
The markets here especially in old city areas witnessed rush of women on shopping spree busy buying items for tomorrow’s festival.
The shops of sweets, groceries, garments, jewelry particularly of cosmetics remained busy with hustle-bustle as women were seen choosing bangles, ‘bindi’ and accessories.
Meanwhile the old city areas of the winter capital were among the busiest locations on Friday ahead of the festival as the markets in these parts sell quality products on wholesale rates.
The traffic department had made special arrangements on vehicular movement and raised barricades for one-way traffic to prevent mess in the areas.
However, famous sweets shops like ‘Pahalwan-di-Hatti’ and ‘Jalleyan Di Hatti’, remained occupied and the buyers were seen in long queues waiting for their turn to buy sweets besides ‘femiyan’ (a traditional food women eat for fast before sunrise).
‘Karwachauth’ is a one-day festival celebrated by Hindu women four days after ‘purnima’ (a full moon) in the month of Kartika.
‘Karwachauth’, like many Hindu festivals, is based on the lunisolar calendar which accounts for all astronomical positions, especially positions of the moon which is used as a marker to calculate important dates.
On ‘Karwachauth’ women, especially in Northern India, who are married fast from sunrise to moonrise for the safety and longevity of their husbands.
The festival falls on the fourth day after the full moon, in the Hindu lunisolar calendar month of Kartik.
Sometimes, unmarried women join the fast for their fiancés.
