Taking serious note of the News item published in various Local and National Newspapers, besides its circulation in the Social Media pertaining to an incident wherein a high ranking Traffic Police Official, namely Sh. Basant Rath, IPS is said to have assaulted a member belonging to Media fraternity, Sh. Rakesh Kumar of Channel-I in full public view on roads.
Jammu: The J&K High Court Bar Association, Jammu strongly disapproves such conduct of the police officer and sympathizes with the Media fraternity & solidly stands with them in their fight against such an onslaught by an Officer in an irresponsible manner.
Further, the Association is of the firm opinion that the members belonging to the Media fraternity are discharging a vital responsibility in keeping the people informed regularly against many odds, which is fundamental to the growth and survival of the Democracy, as such, the police officials particularly the ranking officials are expected to show regard and respect not only the media persons, who have by dint of their hard work and devotion towards their professional obligations have gained the status of Fourth Pillar in Democracy, but the members of Civil Society as well.
The role of media in this State attains more significance as for the last about three Decades they are facing challenges all around in view of the ongoing long drawn militancy and terrorism. In the face of these facts and circumstances the State is passing through, the police is expected to show due respect and regard to the Media persons and support them in performance of their professional duties in order to strengthen the functioning and survival of Democracy.
The Association strongly urged His Excellency the Governor of State of Jammu & Kashmir to personally intervene in the matter and sort it out at the earliest in order to avoid the otherwise peaceful situation to take an ugly turn.
