The gunfight that started between militants and government forces in northern Bandipora district Thursday ended on Friday evening with the killing of all the five militants, the police said. Three soldiers also sustained injuries during the gun-battle.
Senior superintendent of police BandiporaZulfikar Azad confirmed that bodies of all the militants have been retrieved.
We have started a combing operation in the area which will last for some time,” Azad said.
In a statement, a police spokesman said: “The killed militants were affiliated with LeT. Apparently they were part of freshly-infiltrated group.”
The gunfight, in which one of the five militants was killed on Thursday afternoon, had started in ShokbabaSumlar area, barely five kilometers from main Bandipora town, after “specific inputs” about presence of a group of militants in the area, a police official said.
“One militant was killed on Thursday evening while body of another militant was recovered on Friday morning. The operation which was halted on Thursday night, resumed on Friday morning after the trapped militants fired intermittently on security forces from a cowshed of a house. However, the forces later blasted the cowshed and all trapped militants were found dead,” the official said.
Meanwhile, the injured soldiers, who are undergoing treatment, were identified as Jatinder Singh, Harcharan Singh and Anand Prakash of army’s 14 Rashtriya Rifles.
